I’m excited to be visiting AutomataCon at the Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ on May 16 and 17 to learn more about this amazing art form!
On Saturday May 16 from 4:30 to 5:30 pm in the Bickford Theatre, I’ll be part of a panel discussing Automata in Education and Exhibitions, along with moderator Mark Hayward and educators Aaron Kramer, Jay Mankita, and Marian van Dijk.
Then, on Sunday May 17 from 12:15 to 1:15 pm, I’ll be leading a Cranky Dino workshop in the Downstairs Classroom, join me to learn about simple machines, cams, and cranks as you build a paper dinosaur automaton that moves when you turn the handle! In this workshop you will make a model Jurassic-era creature looking for a meal. The project is best for ages 10 and up, but younger kids can do it with adult help. Limited to 25 dinos.

Join us on three Wednesdays in April for this Robotics-themed series of classes designed for homeschoolers in grades 6-9. Sign up for one class or all three. In Make a Solar WobbleBot Robot, learn about circuits, solar power, and "programmable bodies" by building and testing your own WobbleBot using common household and recycled materials. I’m excited to be the guest for Dale Dougherty’s next Fireside Chat as we explore the story behind the updated and revised edition of a Make: classic, Paper Inventions. This new edition ignites imagination with hours of hands-on STEAM activities for young inventors and busy adults.
In this fireside chat, I’ll get to talk about her creative process behind the more than 30 fun projects and variations in this book, from traditional decorative pastimes, amazing math oddities, and daring feats of construction to light-up, motorized, and programmable paper circuits. I’ll also be bringing several of her favorite paper inventions, demonstrating how they fold, pop, spin, glow, and even compute!
Joining the panel are the inspirational Jie Qi, co-founder and CEO of Chibitronics, and Angii De La Cruz, lead instructor at the Thinqubator, the children's makerspace at the Tech Valley Center of Gravity in Troy, NY, who hosted the Paper Inventions book launch event for families.

An automaton is a mechanical figure that moves when you turn a crank. In this workshop you’ll build your own automaton out of paper and adjust the paper mechanism to make it move the way you want. Kids ages 8-12 are invited to the NY Energy Zone in Utica for a special hands-on workshop with STEAM author and educator Kathy Ceceri! Find out how we can generate electricity with wind power, then design and build your own windmill turbine using everyday materials that lights up when it spins!
This workshop starts at 2 pm on Sunday, July 28, and takes approximately 90 minutes. Please arrive early so you have the maximum amount of time to build and test your windmill!
